Sumpah Pemuda

Sumpah Pemuda The Young Indonesians’ Oath (Sumpah Pemuda) is a declaration that came out of a meeting attended by organizers of various associations based on ethnicities. They agreed to merge themselves into one new body named Young Indonesia (Indonesia Muda), a proper name since a good chunk of the members were literally young — in their late teenage years and early twenties.

They swore that from now on they would uphold ‘one country, one nation, one language: Indonesia’; thence nationalism was formally born.

Indonesians recall this event as the deed of the ‘Class of 1928′. It is commemorated on October 28th every year.
