New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) - Open

Applications have closed for study commencing in 2006

The application deadlines given below are for study commencing in 2007.

New Zealand Development Scholarships (Open):

- are only available to students from selected developing countries,
- are for postgraduate study in specific areas of developmental relevance to the student’s home country,*
- cover tuition fees, return economy airfare, a basic living allowance, arrival costs, and medical insurance. Limited assistance may be available for dependents in New Zealand for students with courses of study 18 months or longer.
- are offered by the New Zealand Government, through NZAID.

*Please note applicants from the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia may apply to study at undergraduate level.

To be Eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must:

- be a citizen of an eligible country (see below),

- have several years work experience in a field relevant to their proposed study,

- be proposing to study in an area of developmental relevance specifically targetted by NZAID for their home country,

- have applied for admission to the University of Canterbury. (This application can be submitted at the same time with their Scholarship application.)

- have submitted a complete NZDS application form to reach the University of Canterbury before 15 May 2006. (NB. for applicants from Pacific Island countries the deadline is 17 July 2006.)

Purpose of the Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to progress the social and economic development of selected countries. Therefore, applicants need to demonstrate their commitment to the social and/or economic development of their home country as well as describe the direct benefit to their home country of the proposed study. Scholarship recipients are required to return to their home country for at least two years on completion of the scholarship.

Eligible Countries

Citizens from the following countries are eligible to apply for the New Zealand Development Scholarship (Open):

Pacific Islands: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

Africa:** Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (Ministry of Education nominees), India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam.

Latin America: Argentina*, Bolivia, Brazil*, Chile*, Ecuador, El Salvador*, Guatemala*, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay*, Peru*, Uruguay*.

* applicants from these countries must apply directly to the relevant New Zealand Diplomatic Mission in Latin America.

**preference will be given to applicants from disadvantaged communities.

Disclaimer: The NZDS scheme, including country eligibility, is subject to ongoing review and amendment. Applicants should check their eligibility prior to lodging an application. NZAID reserves the right to decline any application, before it has been fully processed, in the event of country eligibility changes.

Applicants living, studying or working outside their home country will not normally be considered eligible for the NZDS scholarship.

    Dear sir;

    I apprciate your efforts to enhance development in some developing nations through scholarship grants. But still some countries such as Ethiopia and Eriteria were excluded.Prehaps these and other similar nations’ students maight need badly such golden opportunity.So, would you please include them in future and it will be possible for us to apply for and learn in New Zealand to foster our countries’ developmnet.
