QNB, the country’s top financial institution, has offered four new scholarships totalling QR176,000 to Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQ) for promising students.
“QNB is focused on community development and we are pleased to offer this scholarship programme to VCUQ students in our efforts to support educational excellence. We are confident that such support will provide our brightest minds with unequalled opportunities to learn from the best at a prestigious institution,” QNB acting chief executive Ali Sherif al-Emadi said in a statement.
He said the scholarship programme was part of the bank’s objectives of nurturing creativity and innovation while also developing the technical skills necessary for demonstrating that creativity.
VCUQ associate dean of academic affairs Dr Charles Bleick said “the scholarships will go a long way in providing support to deserving students who can benefit both Qatari society and the region.”
“VCUQ offers a stimulating environment for learning, teaching, research and creative expression. Through a partnership with leading corporations in Qatar, we can extend the opportunities for a design-related higher education to a greater number of students and help provide an environment conducive to achieving international stature,” he added.
QNB has been supporting some of the best graduates of VCUQ since 2003 as part of its commitment to support educational endeavours by the Qatar Foundation. Last year’s valedictorian and award-winning graphic designer, Mary Anne Skill was a QNB scholarship recipient.
VCUQ, a branch campus of the Virginia Commonwealth University in the US, provides world-class design education for the citizens of Qatar, the Arabian Gulf and beyond.
Supported and funded by the Qatar Foundation for Education Science and Community Development, VCUQ offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, Graphic Design and Interior Design. [gulf-times.com]
