Malaysia To Offer Scholarships To 15 Top Foreign Students Annually
November 21, 2005 - Posted in Online Education, ScholarshipMalaysia will offer tertiary scholarships to 15 top students from foreign countries each year as part of the effort to position the country as a regional centre of excellence for higher education.
“We want the cream of the cream, meaning we want to select the best to come here and that is why 15 students will be given the scholarship annually,” said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafie Salleh.
Speaking at a news conference after attending the International University College of Technology Twintech’s convocation here Sunday, Shafie said the scholarship scheme has been approved by the Cabinet but the quantum of each award is still being discussed.
“We are also discussing the field of studies but priority would be given to those who could contribute to their nations’ development,” he added.
He said two government-linked companies, Petronas and Golden Hope Bhd, have agreed to support the scholarship scheme.
To date, he said, there are 40,686 foreign students studying in Malaysia. (Bernama)
