Easton students earn Francis Ouimet Scholarships

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund announced that it has awarded local students college tuition assistance scholarships. The scholarship is part of the $1 million the Fund is awarding to 362 students representing 137 Massachusetts golf clubs and 146 colleges and universities for the 2005-2006 academic year.
Candidates for a Ouimet Scholarship must have completed at least two years service to golf at a Massachusetts golf course as a caddie, pro shop worker or course superintendent staff. Candidates must also demonstrate academic achievement and a financial need. The Ouimet Scholarship is a competitive need and merit based undergraduate scholarship and is the largest independent scholarship in New England.

The following Easton students have been named 2005-2006 Ouimet Scholars:
Charles River Country Club, Christopher Nalepa of North Easton, University of Connecticut, and Walter Nalepa of North Easton, Stonehill College.
In addition, Honorary Scholarships, with no financial aid, were presented to, from Pine Oaks Golf Course, Christopher Tarallo of South Easton, Saint Anselm College, and from Sankaty Head Golf Club, Thomas Lucey of North Easton, Assumption College.
The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 in honor of legendary golfer Francis Ouimet. The Ouimet Fund is the largest single-state caddie fund in the country and has awarded over $15.2 Million to over 4,100 individuals since its inception. The Scholarship is a competitive, renewable award that can have a value of $10,000 to $20,000 or more over four years.
