Jesse Denton Scholarships To Be Awarded Again; Contributions to Scholarship fund Encouraged
December 12th, 2005 - Posted in ScholarshipDonors who support the Jesse Denton Memorial Scholarship program are reminded to make contributions before the end of December is a tax deduction is planned for 2005, the scholarship committee noted this week. Scholarships totaling $2000 will be awarded again in spring 2006.
The scholarships honor and carry forward the ideals of Jesse Denton, the late directors of Adult Education for Cocke County Schools who died in September 1994 at age 57. The Memorial Scholarship fund is federally approved as a charitable non-profit program, and contributions can be tax deductible. The program’s first scholarships were presented in May 2005, two awards of $1000 each. Contributions to the scholarship program can be made directly to the fund’s account at the National Bank of Tennessee, made to The Jesse Denton Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Denton family and the scholarship committee expressed thanks to the many people who have already contributed and invited continuing support.
Students who have graduated from the Cocke County GED program or Adult High School, or who expect to graduate during the 2005-06 school year, may apply for scholarships. The deadline for applying this school year is noon of May 1, 2006. An application and recommendation form must be submitted to the Cocke County Adult Education Program, Dr. Hobart Ford Sr. Adult Education Center, 241 Hedrick Drive, Newport (telephone 423-613-0032) by that time. The scholarships can be used for attending a college or university, a Tennessee Technology Center or other vocational school, or a specialized training program. Expenses eligible to be covered with scholarship funds include tuition of fees, textbooks or required equipment, lodging (if relocation is required), transportation support if needed, and childcare support if needed. Jesse Denton’s family established the scholarship fund using contributions made in his memory and selected a committee to put the scholarship program into operation. Committee members include current and retired educators Bryan Douglas, Betty Jo Ford, Charlie Seehorn, and Lonnie Butler. Helping adult education graduates move on to higher education or training is a fitting way not only to honor Jesse Denton’s memory but also to carry forward his work, family members and the committee agreed.
“These scholarships help not only the deserving people who receive them but also their communities and the county,” said Gordon Denton, brother of Jesse Denton. “We encourage adult education graduates and final-year students to apply, and we deeply appreciate contributions to the scholarship program.”
