WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Five athletic training students, three seniors and two juniors, were named as the 2005-2006 Newell-Combs Scholarship award winners this week.

Seniors Sam Bell III (Weston, Conn.), Kathleen Dingledy (Columbus, Ind.), and Brandon McGaughey (Russellville, Ind.) along with juniors Christopher Melton (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Jessica Rubesch (Monticello, Ind.) were honored with Newell-Combs scholarships.

The scholarships are named in honor of longtime Purdue athletic trainer William E. “Pinky” Newell and team physician Dr. L.W. “Doc” Combs, who both served the student-athletes at Purdue University for over 30 years and were strong proponents of athletic training education.

Awarded to junior and senior students in the athletic training education program in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, the scholarships are given to students who exemplify the values held by Mr. Newell and Dr. Combs in both their academic and clinical experiences.

The scholarships are made possible through contributions from alumni and friends of the program, as well as Gatorade.
