The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority has announced a scholarship opportunity for students who enroll at public universities in fall 2006. The Golden LEAF Scholars Program is funded by a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation of Rocky Mount, a long-term economic advancement foundation.

The $3,000 scholarship is available for one academic year for students attending on of the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina in fall 2006 and who resides in a rural county that is tobacco-dependent or economically-distressed (Tier I, II, or III). (See list of qualifying counties below.)

To be considered, an applicant currently attending high school or a community college must meet the following criteria:

• Enroll at one of the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina in fall 2006.
• Be an incoming freshman or a transfer student from a North Carolina community college.
• Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes.
• Reside in one of the 74 qualifying counties (see county listing below).
• Have demonstrated financial need (the value of a family farm is not considered when determining financial need for this scholarship).
• Present required academic transcripts.
• Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students who can demonstrate that their immediate families were adversely affected by the decline in the tobacco industry will be given priority consideration.

The Golden LEAF application and program information will be available at www.CFNC.org/goldenleaf in early February. Applications, transcripts and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms must be received by March 31, 2006.

Golden LEAF Scholarship opportunities may also be available for community college students. Interested students should contact the financial aid office of the community college they attend or plan to attend.
