SUNY Potsdam’s Crane Youth Music program Scholarships
February 3, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipEight full scholarships to the Crane Youth Music summer camp at SUNY Potsdam are available to Jefferson and Lewis County students again this year, through a grant from the Northern New York Community Foundation of Watertown. This is the seventh year that the NNYCF has provided for these scholarships.
The 34th annual CYM camp will be held at SUNY Potsdam June 25 through July 8. More than 300 young musicians, ages 12 to 18, from all over the northeastern United States will convene to study music with a distinguished faculty of more than 30 Crane professors and guest artist/teachers during the two-week program. Participants benefit from master classes, ensemble performances and an atmosphere of intensive study and cooperative creativity.
Selection of CYM scholarship recipients is based on financial need as well as musical ability. Music teachers in Jefferson and Lewis Counties are asked to submit the names of student musicians who are interested in attending CYM but are in need of financial assistance. Judgment of musical ability is based on teacher recommendations and on evaluations prepared by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) – evaluations that are used to determine participation in Regional and Conference All-State and All-County Performing Ensembles.
All Crane Youth Music campers are eligible for an annual scholarship developed in honor of the founding camp director, Professor Emeritus Roy Schaberg, which provides financial assistance to a former CYM camper who is enrolled in The Crane School of Music. This scholarship is for students who made significant musical contributions while a camper at Crane Youth Music; have financial need; and have auditioned and been accepted into The Crane School of Music to pursue a degree in music.
Over the past 33 years, more than 7,900 young musicians have participated in Crane Youth Music. Many are now performing in major symphonies or teaching in universities and public schools throughout the nation.
Interested students in Jefferson and Lewis Counties are encouraged to contact their music teachers for more information on the scholarships, or to contact Nancy Belodoff in the Office of Non-credit, Conferences and Special Programs, at (315) 267-2167 or cym@potsdam.edu. Information about CYM is also available on the Web at www.potsdam.edu/CRANE/CYM. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2006.
