Foundation to give LGBT scholarships

A Chicago-based foundation for the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students is teaming up with the Matthew Shepard Foundation to award three scholarships to high school and college students.

The Point Foundation was created in 2001 to help promote higher education for those discriminated against because of their “sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity.”

This year, three Matthew Shepard-Point Foundation scholarships of $10,000 each will be offered to cover the costs of tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation and living expenses, according to the Point Foundation’s Web site.

Shepard was a victim of a hate crime that cost him his life in Laramie, Wyo., in 1998. Shepard’s parents developed the foundation to help promote tolerance and understanding.
