West Covina Rose Float Foundation Scholarships

The West Covina Rose Float Foundation’s attempt to branch out to other areas of the community is taking shape as its members announce the committee’s first scholarship.

After two successful years as an independent organization, the foundation will offer the West Covina Rose Float Foundation Community Involvement Scholarship for $1,000 and $500 to two students.

“We want to use the float to promote community involvement of youth and seniors,” said Frank Scalfaro, president of the foundation.

That’s why the scholarship will be based on students’ community service benefitting residents in West Covina.

Students could have logged volunteer hours in helping decorating this year’s parade float, or worked with a church group or other organization that had an impact on the community, Scalfaro said.

“The student could be from Baldwin Park … doing wonderful things for West Covina,” Scalfaro said.

The establishment of the scholarship is the latest step in the foundation’s attempt to be about more than just decorating a float.

“We’ve really come a long way,” said Don Nolan, vice president of the foundation. “We haven’t even scratched the surface, but we’re at a point where we’ve raised enough money to start this scholarship program.”

The scholarship winners will be chosen by a panel of independent educators who do not know anything about the applicants, except for their qualifications, Scalfaro said.

It will be offered to full-time high school seniors and those attending community college or earning an undergraduate degree at a four-year university.

The scholarship will go directly to the student’s school.

Those interested in applying can download the forms at www.wcrosefloat.org and must be returned no later than May 1.

The winners will be announced at the foundation’s “Wine and Roses” event June 24 at Heritage House.
