Miss. Dept. of Education to audit Holmes Co. School District

JACKSON, Miss. The Mississippi Department of Education has begun an audit of the Holmes County School District after receiving several complaints from students and their parents.
The complaints center around classroom teaching practices and the audit began on Monday. It’s expected to last two weeks. The state also might take a close look at student permanent records and district and board procedures.

Superintendent of Education Hank Bounds will present the audit’s findings and any recommendations to the state board possibly next month.

A similar audit led to the state taking over the North Bolivar School District in December. Two of the three North Bolivar schools had low statewide test scores and were placed on the state’s priority list.

State law says that districts with half or more of their schools named priority are subject to takeover, but that would not apply to Holmes County.

Bounds said he has received numerous complaints about the district from community members, lawmakers and even board members, but the student complaints made a huge impression.
