SAS Offers Alabama Schools Free Online Learning

SAS, the leader in business intelligence, and the Alabama Department of Education today announced plans to offer SAS’ award-winning Curriculum Pathways® online learning tools free to Alabama educators and students.
As part of SAS’ effort to aid the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast region, SAS is offering this resource via its SAS inSchool® division, which uses an innovative Web-based approach to enhance learning in grades 8-12. Curriculum Pathways covers core disciplines including English, math, history, science and Spanish. Topics map to state and national standards so educators can meet test score goals, differentiate instruction and engage students through higher-order thinking skills. These online-only resources can reach students in class, at home and in community centers.
Any Alabama secondary school may use Curriculum Pathways through July 2007. It is also available to students and educators in North Carolina and West Virginia.

This agreement follows Alabama’s “Technology Impact in Education Week,” held in late January to highlight the state’s strides in delivering instruction and providing increased educational opportunities for students through technology. Alabama initiatives to improve education include providing learning opportunities through sophisticated hardware, educational software, high-speed Internet connections and advanced Web content.
“We hope our statewide educational technology initiatives, including our use of Curriculum Pathways, will serve as bridges to better connect Alabama students and educators with the most contemporary forms of learning available,” said Dr. Melinda Maddox, director of technology initiatives in Alabama’s Department of Education. “We believe in using technology to prepare our students to become the more productive, highly contributing citizens of tomorrow, and we are grateful to SAS for this incredible gift.”
The Alabama agreement exemplifies a wider SAS initiative to make Curriculum Pathways available to all U.S. secondary schools serving students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. SAS is providing more than $3.5 million in software and services to state and local governments and schools in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi to manage relief dollars, track costs associated with rebuilding and consolidate information in reports to the federal government.
