In keeping with the competitive spirit of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, Marian Court College in Swampscott will be hosting an essay writing contest and awarding more than $4,000 in scholarships to four winners. The Essay Scholarship Challenge will take place at an open house and financial aid workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Marian Court College, 35 Little’s Point Road, Swampscott.

Anyone who has already applied or who fills out an application (available at the event) to start college at Marian Court in the day division in September 2006 is eligible to participate in the scholarship challenge. A choice of two topics will be announced at 11:15 a.m. and participants will be given 30 minutes to write their essays. Essays will be evaluated by a faculty panel and the winning essays will be selected. The first, second, third and fourth place winners will receive $2,000, $1,000, $750 and $500 scholarships respectively.

“We are always interested in finding creative ways to supplement need-based financial aid to help make college even more affordable to our students,” said Laurie White, chief academic officer. “The Essay Challenge gives us the chance to offer students additional financial assistance.”

As part of the financial aid workshop, financial aid specialists will be on hand to help students tackle the sometimes tricky issues surrounding financial aid.

“If students would like to bring their own or their parents’ completed federal taxes for 2005, or even estimates, we will get them onto the Internet and help them complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online,” said Melissa Foye, director of financial aid. “Students will also be able to fill out forms for Marian Court sponsored financial aid.”

To register for the event, students may call 781-595-6768 and ask for the admissions department or e-mail the admissions office at info@mariancourt.edu.
