The application deadline for the Cadet Appointment Program Scholarship is March 15 to receive full tuition for four years at the State University of New York Maritime College in New York City.

State Sen. George H. Winner Jr., R-Elmira, is eligible to nominate one individual for the scholarship award for the 2006-07 academic year.

Applicants must be a high school graduate or within one year of graduation, or have attained a state high school equivalency diploma. Also, at the time of admission, they must be a first-time, first-year college student.

While pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, business or science, cadets also prepare for licensing as ship officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine.

No military service is required for graduation. However, a variety of voluntary Reserve Officer Training options are available.

Those wishing to be nominated by Winner must have a combined SAT score of at least 1200, a high school grade-point average of at least 90 percent and have demonstrated leadership and community service experience.

To be considered for a nomination, candidates must submit an application to the Maritime College by March 15. Applications may be requested by contacting Winner’s office in Elmira, 607/732-2765; Bath, 607/776-3201; or Albany, 518/455-2091. Application requests also may be e-mailed to: winner@senate.state.ny.us.

The Maritime College will review applications received from Winner’s legislative district and select nominees eligible for acceptance.
