Collin County Community College awarded 20 scholarships of $750 each to the Hendrick Academy of Honor at its annual fund-raiser this month in Plano.

The presentation was made by Sam Roach, chairman of the college’s board of trustees.
Also present for the presentation were CCCC president Cary Israel, board member Mac Hendricks and U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Plano.

“We are very happy for what Collin County Community College has done,” said Rutledge Haggard, chairman of the Hendrick Academy of Honor Foundation.

The Hendrick Academy was established in 1991 to honor H. Wayne Hendrick for his 15 years of service in the Plano ISD. The foundation awards scholarships to Plano graduates who have been through adverse and trying times, and yet succeeded to graduate from high school and continue onto college.

The scholarships given to the Hendrick Academy will be for the fall semester 2006, and an award reception will take place in August for the students who are picked for the scholarships by the academy and CCCC.

“It (the scholarships) will provide books and tuition for 20 of the Hendrick’s kids at Collin County Community College,” said Haggard

The foundation has 54 students enrolled in colleges, mostly at CCCC.

The foundation and CCCC have developed a great working relationship with the college, co-coordinating the education and mentoring of these young men and women, according to a college statement.

Haggard said the academy had decided to award 30 to 35 more scholarships this spring to the graduates, and these additional awards from CCCC could allow it to award more.

The academy award scholarship for the duration of the college education as long as the student meets the grade requirements of his degree plan.

Two other fund-raisers are planned for the year: A clay shoot on May 5 at the Dallas Gun Club, and the Plano Rotary Golf Tournament on Sept. 25 at Heritage Ranch in Fairview.
