In order to advance Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center’s shift to making the center a more home-like environment for its residents, Alan Dahms and Polli Talton-Dahms of Fort Morgan have donated $110,000 from their new foundation to the center and have created four scholarships for licensed practical and registered nurses.

The $110,000 was donated to the Eben Ezer Foundation and will be used as risk capital for whatever the foundation board decides to use it for in making a more home-like environment.

“The 103-year-old facility is embedded in Morgan County and is doing strategic planning to position itself to appeal to future residents,” Alan Dahms, chairman of the Eben Ezer Board of Directors, said. “One guiding principle is creating ‘A Place Called Home’ that appeals to those who find themselves in need of care.”

The Dahmses have also committed $20,000 annually beginning this year to fund nursing scholarships to pay full educational costs at Morgan Community College and Northeastern Junior College for LPN and RN students and may also be given to high school graduates going into the nursing field.

While the Eben Ezer Foundation Board will ultimately decide how the scholarship money will be given, the $20,000 will most likely be divided into four $5,000 scholarships, Alan said. The idea is to have the students who earn the scholarships work for Eben Ezer for a period of time after graduation.

Alan and Polli Dahms moved to Fort Morgan more than a year ago from Denver, and Alan’s late mother, Gladys Dahms, lived in Brush since 1956 and lived at Eben Ezer near the end of her life. Polli’s mother, Eleanor Talton, moved to Eben Ezer from Florida three years ago and continues to live there.

The Dahmses are currently finishing creating the Pollard-Talton-Dahms Foundation which they said will focus on education, medical research and cutting-edge developments in elder care. The couple have also been supporters of East Morgan County Hospital, Colorado Plains Medical Center and other health care entities.

Alan said the world has been good to him and his wife, and they want to pass that on through their foundation.

“It’s not about us, but the fact that Eben Ezer is a very special place, and we’re very committed to helping it carry on its mission,” Alan said. “The changes they’re making may not increase revenue a nickel, but it will continue to be a better place for its elders, and we truly believe in Eben Ezer and Morgan County.”
