The non-profit Michael Lascaris Scholarship Trust, which annually grants 170 scholarships for the purpose of learning the English language, has begun accepting applications for the 2006-7 academic year.

The Lascaris Trust was founded in August 1999 and has to date awarded more than 1039 scholarships for the study of the English language. Lessons are conducted at two Athens-based English language institutes.

The scholarships cover all levels from Beginner up to and including the Certificate of Proficiency (Michigan and Cambridge) and include all tuition and educational materials for one year, with the possibility of renewal for further years for those recipients who are conscientious in their study and attendance. Applicants must be at least 12 years old (no upper age limit), have Greek ancestry and be Greek Orthodox Christians. Also, preference is given to economically disadvantaged applicants such as the unemployed, orphans, low income and multichild families.

The Lascaris Trust is based on the Last Will and Testament of benefactor Michael Lascaris who was born in Smyrna, Asia Minor in 1903 and died at his home in Chicago, USA in 1991. He considered the knowledge of English an essential skill which not only helped him significantly in his own life but would also help underprivileged Greeks succeed.

The Trust is once again granting the opportunity to 170 candidates to win a scholarship for the next academic year by submitting an application form by April 14, 2006. All forms are then translated and sent to Chicago, USA which are the Trust’s headquarters and where the Scholarship Selection Committee meets to choose the successful applicants.
