Major higher ed solution

As virtually every student and parent knows, college education costs are extremely high, and continue to go higher.

What’s worse, the overwhelming majority (over 60 percent) of financial aid for higher education comes in the form of loans that someone (the student, their parents, or both) ultimately have to pay back.

As a result, more and more students are applying solely to the much less expensive - compared to private - public colleges and universities, especially the public colleges and universities in the state in which they reside.

Unfortunately, there’s a catch. Oft times, the major in which the student wants to concentrate is not offered at any of the public colleges or universities in the state in which they reside.

Fortunately, a program now exists to help students who face this dilemma.
Under the New England Board of Higher Education’s Regional Student Program (RSP), a college student - who is a resident of a New England state - can receive a tuition break if they study a major at a public college or university in another New England state. The catch: that major must not be available at any public college or university in their home state.

The RSP is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Eligibility for the RSP is not based on financial need and, since the program is not considered a form of financial assistance or a scholarship, students in the program are still eligible to apply through other sources for scholarships or other forms of financial aid. All public colleges and universities in New England participate in the program.
