Stanford University will offer the first online high school for gifted students.

The high school, developed by Stanford’s Education Program for Gifted Youth, will begin accepting students this spring for classes in the fall. It’s a three-year, fully accredited high school that will grant diplomas.

Officials with Stanford’s gifted program expect the school will draw students from around the world. The online school may be of particular interest to students who are homeschooled, need advanced instruction in a particular area, want a generally more rigorous curriculum, attend Title 1 schools, or live in rural areas or overseas.

In addition to the online work, students will be able to visit Stanford for up to eight weeks during the summer for things that are difficult to do over the Internet such as laboratory work.

The school was made possible by a $3.3 million gift from the Malone Family Foundation of Englewood, Colo.

Information about the applications, courses and fees will be available online starting April 25 at epgy.stanford.edu/ohs/.
