1st round 2006 National Merit Scholarship winners

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. of Evanston announced its first round of 2006 Merit Scholarship winners Wednesday, naming about 1,000 high school seniors across the nation, including 47 in the Chicago area.

Most corporate-sponsored scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study at an accredited U.S. college or university and range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Others provide a single payment of between $2,500 and $5,000.

All winners are chosen from a pool of 16,000 semifinalists who were selected based on standardized test scores. Chicago-area scholarship winners, listed by their hometowns and their schools, are:
