Annelie Johnson Scholarship
April 24, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipFormer students of the Mount Logan Middle School teacher who died in February will be able to remember her through a scholarship fund set up for outgoing seniors.
More than a decade worth of scholarships have been already established in memory of Annelie Johnson, the 28-year-old science teacher who died suddenly after routine surgery this year.
Graduating students of the Logan City School District who are considering a career as a science teacher can apply for the $1,000 scholarship, which will be rewarded at the annual school awards assembly.
“This year’s seniors were the first students she taught her first year at Mount Logan,†Logan Schools Foundation Director Doree Burt said. The foundation wanted to “get the ball rolling†this year because of the appropriateness of that, she said.
The Logan Schools Foundation provides funding for several scholarships and raises funds for other activities students may not otherwise be able to participate in.
Johnson was in her sixth year teaching at the middle school, the only school she had taught at during her career. Her father, Glen Johnson, said after Annelie’s death that she could have worked in many other fields with her degree in molecular biology, but chose teaching “because she wanted to.â€
In addition to considering a career teaching science, applicants must be accepted at an accredited university and be a high school senior. The winner will be chosen based on academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. Applications for the Annelie Johnson Scholarship and others the Foundation offers are available at Logan High and are due to the student center by May 12.
Several people, including family, friends, co-workers and students, have donated to the fund, Burt said. Some of her fellow teachers are donating through payroll deductions; one student even donated $7 after saving his or her allowance. Donations continue to come in each week, she said.
“This is indefinite,†Burt said, indicating how long the scholarship will be given out.
