Media group names 9 scholarship winners

Nine high school and college students received scholarships totaling $15,000 at the DFW Network of Hispanic Communicators’ annual scholarship awards brunch Saturday in Fort Worth.

Nine high school students also received a total of $1,650 in cash prizes for their winning essays on immigration reform, the theme of this year’s 24th annual high school writing contest.

The Star-Telegram, Diario La Estrella, The Dallas Morning News and Al Dia helped underwrite the contest.

The organization, composed of print and broadcast journalists, public relations professionals and community members, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Here is the list of scholarship recipients and their schools: Lindsey Bever, Tarrant County Community College Northeast Campus; Alyssa Fry, University of Texas at Arlington; Vanessa Leyva, Skyline High School; Tracie Morales, University of Texas at Arlington; Alex Cerda, Sam Houston High School; John Gossett, Ryan High School; Omar Milano, University of North Texas; Elizabeth Rubalcava, Southern Methodist University; and Melissa Winn, University of Texas at Arlington.

The writing contest winners for the ninth- and 10th-grade category are: first, Bradley Blevins, Cleburne High School; second, Camden Stuebe, Northwest High School; and third, Fatima Martinez, Ursuline Academy of Dallas.

The writing contest winners for 11th and 12th grades are: first, Manuel Rendon, Frisco Centennial High School; second, Crystal Quinones, The Academy of Irving; and third, Kristin Heine, PASS Learning Center.

The writing contest winners of the Spanish-language essays are: first, Mayra Rodriguez, Trimble Tech High School; second, Beatriz Castillo, Dallas Thomas Jefferson High School; and third, Julieta Espinoza, Dallas Thomas Jefferson High School.

Scholarship sponsors included the Star-Telegram, Diario La Estrella, NBC-5, Telemundo KXTX/Channel 39, Univision KUVN/Channel 23, the State Fair of Texas, The Dallas Morning News, Al Dia, WFAA/Channel 8 and Gloria Campos, a Channel 8 news anchor.
