More than 11,000 high school students from around the world study abroad each year with AFS Intercultural Programs.

To help local students find out more about going abroad with AFS, local volunteers are holding four information nights, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on Tuesday at Eureka High School, Room 120; Thursday at the McKinleyville High School library; Tuesday, May 2, at the Fortuna High School library; and Thursday, May 4, at the Arcata High School library. Students, parents and interested community residents are welcome to attend at any site.

It’s not too late for students from the U.S. to apply for next year’s programs and scholarships. AFS-USA is offering more than 120 programs this year in more than 40 countries, including several new programs that were developed based upon student needs and interests.

One of the newest AFS summer programs is the Soccer Intensive Program, where students spend seven weeks in Paraguay living with a host family and playing soccer with Club Olimpia, the No. 1 soccer club in Paraguay.

There are programs in Australia and New Zealand that combine host family living with community service and outdoor adventure, and a Russian language program in Latvia that includes a monthlong immersion in the language and culture, as well as programs in Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and China — just to name a few.

AFS also offers 18 and older programs for graduating seniors and college students that focus on community service abroad.
