Scholarships are not necessarily only for high achievers – those with a passion for the hospitality industry can now apply for a scholarship to pursue a hospitality diploma in Singapore.

In line with the increasing demand for qualified workers in the hospitality industry, Guilford Hospitality College, Singapore, together with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is offering up to 400 scholarships to both students and those in the service industry without paper qualifications.

The award offers prospective students the chance to undergo hands-on training in the hospitality industry.

Upon completion of the course, students will receive the Diploma of Hospitality Management from the University of Ballarat, Australia.

“Many graduates have paper qualifications but not the skills necessary to secure a job in the field,” said RICS Training Sdn Bhd (UMS’ training provider) director Dr S. Sri Kumar.

“This course provides not only the theoretical knowledge but also the practical skills to be successful in the industry,” he added.

The 24-month course, which has a minimum entry requirement of one credit in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam and spoken English, consists of five days of training and one day of study a week.

During the course, fully paid for by the scholarship, students will undergo training at various departments of hotels in Singapore.

“Learning in various departments of hotels makes the student more knowledgeable of the industry as a whole, and thus more valuable when they graduate,” said Dr Sri.

This further allows students to be part of the “Earn as you learn scheme”, under which they will receive S$600 (RM1,376) to S$800 (RM1,835) as their monthly allowance. Students are responsible for their accommodation and living expenses.

Prior to going to Singapore through the scholarship, candidates will have to complete a two-week programme by the Centre for Training and Consultancy Services, UMS, after which they will receive a Career Certificate in Hotel Management from the university.

The fee for this two-week course is RM850, inclusive of registration and fees. For further information, contact RICS Training at tel: 03-4252 3250 or fax: 03-4253 3998, Nabilah Lee Lee at 016-212 7868, or Dr Sri at 016-281 5188.
