Wichita Area Technical College, in partnership with three other colleges, has received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to develop education and training curricula for aerospace manufacturing.

Purdue University, El Camino College in Los Angeles and Oregon Institute of Technology are the other partners.

WATC’s role will be similar to the other colleges. Each will use the grant funds to pay for on-site faculty. They will work with OEMs and tier one suppliers, gathering data and information on what specific technical tasks are being performed in the various manufacturing processes.

The faculty will take the information back to partner teams to create course work plans or a series of modularized courses for the industry. In cooperation with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, a process for awarding nationally recognized certification will be established.

“This is a perfect way for WATC to be a part of drawing national attention to Wichita’s contribution to this national effort,” says Camille Kluge, WATC president. “We believe it complements the county’s training initiative at Jabara as a means to design, develop and deploy nationally recognized and certified curricula for training aerospace manufacturing technicians.”

Grant funding begins July 1. WATC has begun contact with local OEMs and tier one suppliers to begin the project.
