The Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida’s (BCBSF) philanthropic affiliate, recently awarded UNIDAD/Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center a two-year grant totaling $80,000 to support children’s oral health. The Miami Beach Children’s Oral Health Initiative, sponsored by the North Beach Health Coalition, will administer the program. Organizers designed the initiative to provide dental screening and proper brushing techniques to students from low-income, uninsured homes in five elementary schools and two childcare facilities in North Miami Beach.

UNIDAD/Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center will serve as the referral and outreach agent for the dental program. The center provides diverse programs, including employment training and placement for seniors over 55. The center also offers youth tutoring, immigration and naturalization services and regular cultural events to recent immigrants.

The North Beach Health Coalition members include North Beach Merchant Association, MBHCC, AYUDA, Miami Beach Health Center, Miami Dade Public Schools System and Miami-Dade College Dental Hygiene Program.

The community center grant is one of 10, totaling $532,112, that The Blue Foundation will present this winter to nonprofit health clinics and community outreach programs across Florida. Through strategic grant-making, The Blue Foundation supports programs that increase access to quality health-related services for uninsured and underserved Floridians. The Blue Foundation annually awards up to $1 million in grants during two grant cycles. The next Request for Proposals deadline is March 18.
