Stand Out Student, Scholarships
College can be an expense for any family.
But one Savannah senior and his family had that burden taken off of their bank accounts with several scholarships.
The only thing this Jenkins’ senior had to do was decide which scholarship he wanted to accept.
“Step 2, take your cbi back in it and make your weapon safe.” Jack Traver instructs fellow ROTC members on firing a gun.
Traver is the rifle team commander in the ROTC program at Jenkins High School. Traver’s passion for the ROTC program will spread far beyond the walls of the school when he graduates in a few weeks and begins the next phase.
“Not just the obvious cool stuff of getting to blow stuff up or getting to drive a tank or something like that but the fact that you actually get to serve your country and give something back.” says Traver.
Traver tells News 3’s Randi Hempel that his dream to attend West Point Military Academy came true when he received a large envelope in the mail.
“I open it up and there’s this leather bound thing from West Point and it says we are very pleased to offer you admission to the US military academy and i’m doing back flips through my house and screaming and carrying on.”
But even if Traver didn’t get into West Point, youc na say he had a few back-ups; full scholarships to Mercer, Georgia Tech and Annapolis Naval Academy, which was the icing on the cake.
“I open it up and there’s my acceptance to the naval academy.†says Traver.
“And at this point, you’re thinking what?†asks Hempel.
“I’m gonna have to buy a bigger hat, I can’t fit through the door, I’ve got a big head now.”
Acceptance to both is rare and so is the more than one million dollars in scholarships Traver received.
“I’m actually kind of in a state of shock, I can’t believe i’ve gotten all of it, I know it wasn’t me, I have to you know, give credit to God for that.” says Traver.
Traver is one of more than 40 students at Jenkins who combined are receiving $5.6 million worth of scholarships. That’s pretty hefty considering the entire Chatham County School district received $7 million in scholarships last year.
