The first Ralph Bunche Scholarship of $500 will be awarded later this month by the Ralph Bunche Community Organization.

The academic scholarship will be awarded to a local African-American high school student who has demonstrated financial need, social commitment and leadership potential, an organization spokesperson said.

The scholarship was established in 2005. Eligible students must reside in Benton.

The recipient will be announced at the community’s annual Juneteenth Celebration.

The scholarship recipient may use the money for tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, general living expenses and other college expenses, the spokesperson said.

The scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Ralph Bunche, the first African-American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. It was awarded to Bunche in 1950 for his mediation in Palestine in the late 1940s that led to an armistice agreement between the Jews and Arabs in the region.
