University College at Thomaston announced the availability of Osher Scholarships for the fall 2006 semester. The University of Maine System offers Osher Scholarships to encourage more Maine people of all ages to participate in higher education. Preference is given to first-time students. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

An Osher Scholarship will cover the cost of a University course, including books and required materials, up to $600. To qualify, a student must be a Maine resident, a high school graduate or GED recipient, and someone who is committed to completing an introductory level course. University College at Thomaston, with education sites in Camden, Islesboro, North Haven, Vinalhaven and Monhegan, offers courses from Maine’ s seven public universities.

The Osher Scholarship is made possible by a gift made in 2000 from The Bernard Osher Foundation. Since the 2000 fall semester, over thirteen hundred students have received scholarships and enrolled in University courses.

Once enrolled, students enjoy personalized support from experienced University counselors. Students may also use tutoring services plus a variety of skill-development workshops at University College.

“The Osher Scholarship offers first time college students the chance to give it a try without committing themselves financially,” said Thomaston Director, Deborah Meehan. “With the support of experienced advisors, the scholarship has helped many of our students get started and succeed in college.”
