2006 Phil Harris Scholarships awarded

Five Linton-Stockton High School seniors were presented the 2006 Phil Harris Scholarship awards Wednesday evening during a celebration dinner at The Old Bank & Co.

Marsha Kelley, treasurer of the Phil Harris Scholarship Trustees, presented the awards to Evan Herndon, Caleb Fischer, Emily Gaither, Kara Sue Mullis and Chris Taylor.

Herndon, the son of Craig and Tricia Herndon, is the valedictorian of the LSHS graduating class. He will major in mechanical engineering when he attends Purdue University in the fall.

While in high school, Herndon served as president of the National Honor Society, was in the Letterman’s Club and belonged to the Junior Civitan. Active in sports, he played varsity basketball for four years, was on the cross-country team for four years and belonged to the golf team for two years. During the summers, Herndon worked as a lifeguard for the Linton A.M. Risher Pool.

Fischer, the son of Kevin and Laura Fischer, has enrolled at Butler University to major in chemistry. Fischer was on the basketball team for four years and a four-year veteran of the golf team. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Club, Junior Civitan, and the Letterman’s Club.

Chris Taylor, son of Tim and Linda Taylor, will attend Vincennes University to study business management. He was a four-year member of the golf and tennis teams and served as captain of both teams. In addition, he was a member of the Letterman’s Club, National Honor Society, Junior Civitan and Academic Club.

Mullis, daughter of Terry and Nancy Mullis, has chosen accounting as her major when she enters Indiana University in September. While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, German Club, Accounting Club, and the golf team. She was a band member for four years and a member of the Miner Cadets.

President of the 2006 LSHS senior class, Gaither is the daughter of Jim and Sherry Gaither. During her four years in high school, she was a member of the volleyball team, track team and Miner Cadets and was a member of the softball team for one year. Gaither was also an active member of the German Club, Junior Civitan, Letterman’s Club, and Student Council.

“It’s always exciting this time of the year to see the new Phil Harris Scholarship winners,” said Barbara Rollison, president of the Phil Harris Scholarship (PHS) trustees.

Other PHS trustees are Kevin Fischer, vice president; David Sisk, secretary; Marsha Kelley, treasurer and Jewelledean Haseman.

Members of the PHS Foundation Committee are Don Steward, John Wilkes, Polly Miller, Candace Templeton, Jack Shelton and Bart Beard. Regina Kramer who recently passed away was a committee member and also served on the first established PHS Foundation board.

A total of 121 students have received a PHS since the Phil Harris Foundation was established in 1979 by Don Steward and the late Frank Miller.
