Five area residents were awarded scholarships at the May 10 annual Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s annual spring dinner meeting at the Fremont Country Club.

For 30 years, the auxiliary has awarded five to eight scholarships to residents of Sandusky County who are going on to post-secondary education to pursue careers in the medical field. Applicants are screened by the committee, and the amount of the scholarship is based on need and the length of the program.

Committee chair, Robin Williams, thanked her committee members and the Memorial Hospital physicians before introducing the recipients and their families.
# Lynn Mintz of Gibsonburg is an LPN and works full time for Dr. Wade Young. She is pursuing her RN degree at The College Network and Bowling Green State University and will graduate in March 2007. She has also received the hospital’s Mary Dalton award.

# Jillian Adams, daughter of Sherry and Jeff Adams, is a 2004 graduate of Lakota High School. She is pursuing a 4-year nursing degree, having completed two years at Lourdes College; and the second two years at the University of Findlay.

# Nathaniel House, son of Rebecca and Paul, is a 2006 graduate of Lakota High School. He will attend the University of Findlay’s four-year program in Nuclear Medical Technology.

# Angela Fielder, mother of two, attends Terra Community College in pursuit of a two-year nursing degree. This is her second auxiliary scholarship and she is also a past Mary Dalton recipient.

# Jill Link, daughter of Brenda Stang and Steven Link, is a 2002 graduate of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School. She has attended Owens Community College and The University of Toledo and will graduate in Spring 2007 with an RN degree.

In all, the auxiliary awarded $12,000 to the five recipients.

Williams said the scholarships are made possible by the annual charity ball proceeds and the Mary Dalton Scholarships funded by the physicians at Memorial Hospital. Auxiliary treasurer Diane Gorman reported a $15,000 profit from this year’s April 29 Hawaiian Luau Ball.

Dinner music was provided by the Ross High School Brass Quintet and Woodwind Trio with Jane Beckley on piano and directed by Catherine Lewis.

Hospital President and CEO Al Gorman thanked auxiliary co-presidents Meech-ka Abdoo and Cindy (Wade) Young for their leadership, and for “All that the auxiliary does!”

“The new OB room is stunning,” he exclaimed, asking everyone to come and take a tour.

Janet Overymer was awarded Auxilian of the Year. She began volunteering in 1997 and helps run the gift shop and volunteers in numerous projects.
