To mark the tenth anniversary of the Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) a new scholarship has been named after founder Brian Hall.

“We have done what we set out to do – there was a need to build a strong Bermudian workforce in the insurance industry,” Mr. Hall said last week.

“The early BFIS scholarship graduates are now senior underwriters, officers and working in senior management positions and there is continuing need for additional talent.

“We were driven to help young Bermudians, particularly high school graduates, get the necessary professional designations or academic qualifications because a lot of students were returning to Bermuda with inappropriate qualifications.” Mr. Hall said.

The Board of Trustees of BFIS have decided this year to introduce the Brian Hall 10th Anniversary Scholarship offering $30,000 a year for up to four years.

Mr. Hall, a former head of the Bermuda office of broker and captive manager Johnson & Higgins, did not benefit from a college experience as he started his career in the insurance world directly after graduating from Saltus and joining AIG in 1958.

In founding BFIS, he wanted high school graduates to be in a position to take advantage of opportunities in the industry.

“We built a programme enabling students to study insurance courses and have a mentor from the insurance industry assigned to them to give advice and support.”

Since 1996 BFIS has awarded $398,000 in scholarships and almost 60 Bermudians have directly received support from the BFIS programme and with support of BFIS patrons 45 Bermudians are working in the insurance industry.

“We have been very fortunate to see the class of 2005 also become members of BFIS and they are looking for entry level students and actuaries,” he said.

“The reason for our success is because of the hands-on mentoring the students gain from professionals in the industry and intern programmes such as the BFIS Chicago Intern Programme.”
