New Scholarship Benefits New England-based Students
May 31st, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipA new scholarship founded by Montage, a contemporary furniture retailer in Boston, and Italian kitchen design firm Arclinea Boston challenges students of architecture or design at New England-based schools to design a contemporary kitchen-living area within the traditional, historic architecture of Boston and its suburbs. Known as the Montage/Arclinea Contemporary Design Scholarship Competition, the award will go to three winning students, who will be awarded $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000, respectively.
Students are encouraged to draw inspiration from the kitchen designs and philosophy of master Italian architect Antonio Citterio, who is the brain behind Arclinea, as well as many furniture designs for B&B Italia, which are offered at Montage.
“Citterio has a strong point of view, and it’s one that can be applied to every facet of our home lives,†says Montage co-owner Chris Bates. “His presentation is elegant and his materials exquisite, but the driving force behind every design, whether it’s a sofa or a kitchen, is always functionality.†With the new competition, Bates intends to promote the idea that contemporary design and traditional architecture can work well together—a concept that’s beginning to blossom in Boston.
Like Citterio, says Arclinea Boston president Philip Guarino, students shouldn’t be afraid to literally and figuratively break down walls with their design concepts. “We hope that students will incorporate Citterio’s sense of enjoyment and togetherness into their own designs.â€
Entry forms and details for the competition are available online. Submissions, due by July 21, will be reviewed by a judging panel composed of Boston area architects and designers specializing in innovative contemporary design. Entries will be displayed in the Montage and Arclinea Boston showrooms, and winners will be announced this August.
