Volunteer State Community College has received nearly $1 million in federal grant money to provide history education for teachers, college officials announced today.

The $998,508 grant, which is the largest in the history of the college, is earmarked for the Tennessee Educators’ Active Colloquia for History, or TEACH, program.

The money will be used to help the program, which is a partnership with the Wilson County school system and the Tennessee Historical Society, provide and expand history workshops for teachers during the next three years.

The latest round of workshops recently kicked off with tours of Fisk University and the Bicentennial Mall.

Participating educators are encouraged to use what they learn during the workshops to engage students in learning about history.

Tours this week include teachers from Clay, Overton, Robertson, Trousdale and Wilson counties.
