Micron Foundation Awards $253,000 in Scholarships to 13 Students
The Micron Technology Foundation, Inc., announced todaythe names of thirteen outstanding students who will receive a total of$253,000 over the next four years through the Micron Science andTechnology Scholars program. Virginia high school senior Winston Yanof Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology willreceive a $55,000 scholarship as the top awardee in the Micron Scienceand Technology Scholars (MSTS) program. Twelve other students willeach receive a $16,500 scholarship and attend some of the mostprestigious universities in the country.
Since its inception in 2001, the Micron Science and TechnologyScholars program has positively impacted the lives of 73 students byproviding more than $1.5 million in scholarships and invaluableindustry experience through mentorship and other opportunities. As apart of the award, Micron also grants the scholars’ high school $1,000to use for science and technology programs. Micron has granted highschools a total of $38,000.
Scholarships and grants are awarded annually to thirteen studentsand high schools from the states of Colorado, Idaho, Texas, Utah, andVirginia. A complete list of scholarship recipients is available atwww.micron.com/scholars.
The MSTS program is designed to recognize and reward studentsexcelling in academic and leadership skills and to encourage theirpursuit of careers in high technology. In addition to financialassistance, Micron offers these scholars leadership and mentoringopportunities through the Technology Adventures and LeadershipLearning Week (TALL Week), June 18-23, 2006.
TALL Week begins by engaging students in leadership andteam-building activities ranging from ropes courses to mountain bikingand white water rafting in central Idaho. The week culminates atMicron’s headquarters, located in Boise, where scholarship recipientsinteract with senior scientists, engineers and company officers whilethey participate in an on-site job-shadow program with their Micronmentors. All activities during TALL Week are designed to help studentsexplore their potential, forge new relationships, and discover theimportance of teamwork and collaboration.
Scholarships are focused on students planning to major inelectrical engineering, computer engineering, chemical engineering,mechanical engineering, computer science, material science, physics orchemistry. Along with superior academic skills, a student’s communityleadership and involvement in extracurricular activities is carefullyconsidered during the unique interview process in which semi-finalistsare flown to Micron’s headquarters for a panel interview with companyofficers and Foundation representatives.
Applications for the MSTS program are available to high schoolstudents beginning in the fall of their senior year through highschool counselors or the Internet, at www.micron.com/scholars. The2007 postmark deadline for applications is January 20, 2007.Scholarship winners are announced each spring.
