Albright College to offer street-wise scholarships
June 10, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipAlbright College has long noted that students who attend either 13th and Union or 13th and Green Elementary Schools, Northeast Middle School, Reading High School and Albright can go from kindergarten through college all on the same street - and now it’s offering a scholarship to help them do it.
“Ripley’s Believe It or Not” said in the 1960s that Reading’s North 13th Street was the only place in the country where this could be accomplished. According to the college, more than 100 people have completed their educations on 13th Street in the college’s 150-year history, referring to themselves as “The 13th Street Gang.”
The new $15,000 yearly scholarship, which will go to students who attend school entirely on the street, will first be offered to students starting classes at Albright in the fall of 2007. It would cover more than half of a year’s tuition to the private college. “We hope this scholarship will keep the tradition going,” said Lex O. McMillan III, Albright president. - AP
