Bowles Says UNC System Could Be Online Leader
June 11, 2006 - Posted in Education News, Online EducationIf courses were better coordinated and marketed, the University of North Carolina could become a major force in online education, says President Erskine Bowles.
The university’s 16 campuses already offer 90 online degrees and 978 courses, but Bowles said the system could rival such online, for-profit schools as the University of Phoenix, which has 311,000 online students and 180 campuses.
“It will enable us to reach out internationally, and I think we’ll be able to take advantage of our great brand that we have,” he said Friday.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro plans to have a microeconomics course that operates line an interactive computer game. The course was demonstrated for the Board of Governors at its Friday meeting.
Online classes should be consolidated, officials said.
Instead of offering dozens of classes of the same course by all universities, the system could have fewer large online classes to save money.
