The Sun Herald recently awarded scholarships to two South Mississippi high school graduates interested in journalism careers.

Alex McAdams graduated from Gulfport High School, and Toni Cruthirds graduated from St. John High School. Each received $1,000 to help pay for college.

McAdams worked on the staff of the GHS yearbook, Voyage, and also served in 2004 as an summer intern for the Harrison County Tax Collector’s office.

Cruthirds worked on the yearbook staff at St. John, as well as the student newspaper, Eagle Press.

The students were required to write essays to apply for the scholarship, and winners were chosen based on those essays, as well as on their achievements and extracurricular activities.

Students also were required to submit two letters of recommendation.

“Miss McAdams manages to lead by example, surely the best method of leadership,” said Vicki Lawrence, sponsor of the Voyage. “Other staff members attempt to emulate her style and attitude. She has no difficulty whatsoever in making her points or being heard.”

Cruthirds said she wants to be a journalist because it’s always changing, depending on what the reporter is writing.

“… It allows a writer to continuously learn and create new things,” she said in her essay. “One in this field of writing is constantly rethinking old ideas and discovering new ones.”

McAdams plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the fall, and Cruthirds will attend New York University.
