With 16 of 20 eligible graduates (not counting two foreign exchange students, etc.) qualifying for the Millennium Scholarship from Nevada, plenty of scholarships were announced for Smith Valley High School seniors during the school’s Awards Night last Thursday.

The Millennium Scholarships are worth $10,000 over four years if used at Nevada schools and recipients must achieve a 3.1 grade point average in high school to qualify (winners listed below).

Besides that, almost 40 scholarships were received by SVHS seniors (some additional not announced that night).

Not counting that scholarship, the scholarships received by the graduates have a value of over $33,000.

One new local scholarship was given that night, the Helen Johnson Memorial Scholarship, worth $500 and received by Mandy Skaggs.

Four graduating seniors received at least four scholarships (not counting Millennium Scholars), led by Kristina Acciari, who earned seven scholarships worth $6,500. Nivea Castaneda received six scholarships worth $4,950, Holley Gansberg received five scholarships and Mandy Skaggs earned four scholarships worth $4,370.

“This was a real good group of kids,” said SVHS counselor Eric Ozolins. “It was real competitive (for scholarships).”
