Steilacoom School District enrolling online students statewide
June 22, 2006 - Posted in Online EducationThe Steilacoom School District in Pierce County plans to enroll students statewide this fall through its online academic program.
The district’s Washington Virtual Academy is operated with a company called Insight Schools, which has a similar agreement with the Quillayute Valley School District near Forks.
The arrangements are opposed by the state teachers’ union. Washington Education Association President Charles Hasse (HAH’-see) says the online deals will result in state education dollars supporting for-profit companies.
He also says there’s a social richness at school that can’t be replaced on the Internet.
