The Kiwanis Club of Decatur awarded three scholarships to Decatur students heading for college this fall.

The club’s annual Pancake Day each February helps pay for the scholarships, which are $1,000 each, as well as other programs that help children and youths.

Whitney Irvin received the scholarship designated for a 2006 graduate of Decatur High School. The daughter of Ann Irvin and Michael Irvin, she plans to major in education at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Meredith Kirk received the Kiwanis scholarship at Austin High School. The daughter of John and Tammy Kirk, she will be a nursing student at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

At Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, Christina Doerter was the recipient. She is the daughter of David and Inez Doerter and plans to major in emergency management at Jacksonville State University.

The Kiwanis Club awards a scholarship at each Decatur school where it has a Key Club, a Kiwanis-sponsored youth organization. Irvin and Doerter are former members of Key Clubs.
