Tri-city SPOTLIGHT: Schools, scouts. scholarships and fundraising

Port Coquitlam’s Art Knapp Plantland & Florist raised $5,500 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at its 9th annual Ladies Night on May 7.

The evening included a fashion show and offerings from Skindulgence Spa, Clothing, Curves, Starbucks, Pallas Athena Greek Kouzina, Creekside Fashions, Must B Wines, Body Shop, Pampered Chef and Mirabel Seafood.

Art Knapps is looking forward to its Fall Ladies Night in November.

Scouts honours

Several Tri-City youngsters were recognized with the Chief Scout Award, the highest badge a Scout can earn. Recipients of the award are recognized around the country as being leaders in their troop and in the community.

Chief Scouts for 2006 are: Dylan Wolters, William Ruth, Brad Perry, Anthony Assalone and Kevin Wagner (5th Coquitlam); Erica Carr and Christopher Carr (5th Port Coquitlam); Chad Roots and Wesley Roots (4th Port Coquitlam).

Inspiration

Moody middle students heard inspirational words of wisdom on patience, consistency and setting goals from three-time Olympian Leah Pells, who was speaking at the school’s athletics awards assembly June 15.

Former student Jeff Tambellini, an NHL hockey player with the New York Islanders, was inducted into the Gallery of Greatness.

Over 180 students received athletic pins. Jamie Lively was named the top male athlete and top female went to Jenna Kara.

$ for Cancer

The 201 RCSCC Grilse recently hosted their annual Ceremonial Review, and presented the Terry Fox Foundation with a cheque for over $3,200. In support of cancer research, Lt(N) Shannon McGee and CPO2 Vasquez shaved their heads and donated their hair for wigs.

Carnival prize

A Coquitlam school’s business club has won the 2006 Student Venture of the Year from Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC).

Centennial secondary’s Centennial Business Club organized a carnival for students and families from the school’s surrounding community. A series of smaller in-school sales events, including raffles, bubble tea sales, pancake breakfast and sports event concessions, augmented by the sale of company shares, raised the money needed to stage the carnival.

Devon Webster and Alicia Woodside, both of Centennial, received Entrepreneurial Spirit awards.

Electric star

Alexander Shipillo, a Grade 12 student at Point Grey Secondary, has been recognized with a $2,500 General Electric Star Award by the GE Foundation.

Shipillo’s father, Sergey Shipillo, works for GE - Transportation in Port Coquitlam. The Foundation will also give $500 to Point Grey Secondary; Shipillo can choose a teacher to designate how the money will be used at the school.

Promotion

Tony Osachoff has been promoted to the position of vice president at BMO Nesbitt Burns.

He’s been providing investment advice to his BMO clients since 1992. Osachoff is also second vice president of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce.

The grads

Tri-City grads are being recognized with major entrance scholarships to Simon Fraser University, worth between $24,000 and $34,000.

The successful students are: Asif Zaman, Aditi Ramesh, Mary Choi, all of Port Moody secondary; Courtney Novotny and Katelin Wood, both of Terry Fox secondary; Sarah Wardlaw and Christine Niven, both of Gleneagle secondary; and Hannah Carpendale, of Dr. Charles Best secondary.
