June 27, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipAt the same time Bill Gates has determined to take a step back from Microsoft, he’s helping two Dayton teens take some giant steps forward.
The Gates Millennium Scholarship, which promises recipients up to 10 years of undergraduate and graduate education, has been awarded to Stephanie Rucker of Colonel White School for the Arts and Donieka Walker, a Stivers School for the Arts graduate.
According to Mary Williams, director of communications and administration for the program, the students are among 1,000 selected nationwide from 11,000 applicants.
Williams said recipients are chosen on the basis of academic achievement, community service, leadership potential and financial need.
Rucker will attend Clemson University. Walker will head to Michigan Technological University. Both plan to attend graduate school.
Said an excited Walker: “Everyone keeps calling me ‘Bill.’ “
