Warner student named scholarship finalist
Warner High School senior R.A. “Tony†Hayes has been named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist. Hayes was selected by the staff of Oklahoma American Legion 2006 Boys State, which was held at NEO A&M College in Miami, with 720 young men from all over the state attending.
Officials said Hayes was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement and financial need. He will join 99 other national finalists from around the United States competing for one of nine scholarships, with each scholarship worth an expected $20,000.
Hayes is a member of the State and National Honor Societies, and attended the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. as captain of the Warner High School Academic Team.
He also is a member in the Warner High School Marching Band, science club and is the yearbook editor. He is an active member of Keefeton Baptist Church and has worked on programs to provide for the elderly in the community and performed in church musicals.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of U.S. servicemen and women who served during the Korean War to maintain the security of the Korean Peninsula, joined with the American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of war-time veterans who have served honorably.
Hayes’ great-grandfather, Alvin L. Cowan, Msgt., served with the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Hayes is the son of Robert and Lena Hayes.
