Two UBD Undergrads Awarded French Language Scholarships

Two top performers of the French language class at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) received their French Language Scholarship awards to undertake a four-week-long French Language Programme at the Universite de Franche-Comte in France.

In a presentation ceremony held yesterday at the Senate Room, UBD, the two awardees, Siti Khadizah Hj Omar and Saidatul Akmal Hj Saidi, received their scholarships from the French Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Mr Patrick Bonneville, in the presence of the Vice Chancellor of UBD, Dato Dr Hj Ismail bin Hj Duraman.

The scholarships for the intensive French Language Programme at the Universite de Franche-Comte is the fruit of the on-going collaboration between UBD’s Language Centre and the French Embassy in Brunei and also Alliance Francaise. The unique opportunity for the two students to study in an immersion programme in France was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Government of the Republic of France.

This is the fourth time and fourth year that the French government through the French Embassy in Brunei has provided the French Language Scholarship Award to undergraduates studying French Language at UBD. The scholarships are awarded to students who have done exceedingly well in the French language courses taught at the Language Centre in UBD.

During the month-long programme at Universite de Franche-Comte, the scholarship awardees will attend art intensive French language programme, stay with their French foster families, and visit places of French historical and cultural interest as part of the programme. Through this scholarship award, Siti Khadizah Hj Omar and Saidatul Akmal Hj Saidi will experience, first-hand, contemporary French society, culture and lifestyle.

The Vice Chancellor of UBD and its Language Centre’s Director expressed their warm appreciation for the French Embassy’s assistance and cooperation in UBD ’s French language programme. UBD’s Language Centre began offering French as an elective course to undergraduates in 2001.
