MCA helps 1,500 get scholarships
July 6th, 2006 - Posted in ScholarshipOver the last five years, MCA has assisted in obtaining some 1,500 Public Services Department (JPA) scholarships for the Chinese community.
MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said this year, they managed to secure an additional 110 scholarships on top of the allocated 300.
“During a meeting last month, we brought with us a list of 800 students who achieved excellent results in public examinations.
“We fought our case and in the end, were granted an additional 110 scholarships.
“We in the MCA will continue to fight for the community especially on education matters,†he said in his speech during the opening of a new building of SJK (C) Triang 2 near here on Friday.
Also present were Deputy Education Minister Datuk Hon Choon Kim, Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow, state exco members Datuk Hoh Khai Mun and Datuk Fong Koong Fuee, state assemblymen Datuk Ti Lian Ker, Pang Tsu Ming, Chua Boon Seong and Chan Chong Fah.
Ong, who is also the Housing and Local Government Minister, said the people must be aware of the fact that the number of straight As students were increasing by the year.
“On an average, we have at least 1,000 Chinese students who obtained distinctions each year,†he said.
Ong said the community must learn to adapt to changes and be competitive to face global challenges in line with the nine-point party platform which was launched early this year.
He said the party would continue to emphasise on the importance of education and render assistance to Chinese schools.
Meanwhile, Hon said through discussions with the Government, they managed to secure another 17,000 places in Chinese schools nationwide.
He said the Government had approved the building of eight more new schools.
“Five of them have already been completed and three are still under construction.
“Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the Chinese schools have been allocated RM100mil,†he said, adding that up to June this year RM8mil had been disbursed for development.
Hon said MCA had helped to relocate 52 schools with less than 10 students to more populated areas since 1995.
