Six to receive Future Leaders scholarships
Six Bay State Summer Games athletes were chosen as recipients of the 2006 Future Leaders Scholarship.
The $2,000 scholarships were awarded by the Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation and one of its sponsors, Verizon.
The athletes are high school seniors-to-be from six different communities and six different sports: Gloucester’s Thomas Salah (hockey), Rivers School’s Lauren Creedon of Stoneham (softball), Norwood’s Kevin Breen (lacrosse), Canton’s Robyn Panciocco (field hockey), Nashoba Regional’s David Lauritano of Stow (track) and Pomfret School’s Gina Marie Raymond of Sutton (basketball).
The winners will receive their scholarships during the Bay State Games opening ceremonies on Thursday night at Boston University’s Agganis Arena.
The winners were selected from a competitive pool of more than 100 applicants. Applicants were judged on their leadership skills, academic excellence, athletic achievements, and community service.
The M.A.S.F. is a non-profit organization that promotes personal development, physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship through athletic competition and scholarship programs for athletes of all ages in Massachusetts.
Last year’s scholarship recipients are planning to continue their athletic endeavors at the college level: Dartmouth’s Kathryne Forand at Endicott College, Duxbury’s Andrew Knapp at Harvard, Stow’s Connor Hogan at Bates College and Chelmsford’s Elizabeth Pisarik at Brandeis.
