Three of the four outstanding young Brunei students who have been selected for the 2006 Singapore scholarship awards were hosted to a tea reception to bid “bon voyage” by the Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam yesterday.

The Singapore scholarship that was first offered by the former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at the 6th Asean Summit in 1998 is aimed at fostering closer ties and greater friendship among students of Asean member countries through the experience of living and learning together.

The four recipients are Mr Tse Wai Cheung from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, Ms Ho Kim Mei and Ms Foo Yu Jing, both from SayiddinaAli Secondary School, Kuala Belait, and Mr Tan Chee Hau. They will study at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

In his speech, Singapore High Commissioner Mr Joseph K H Goh said the students should be proud for being accepted by NUS as the high standard of the university was internationally acknowledged, being ranked as one of the top 25 universities in the world.

Under the scholarship scheme, the Singapore government will sponsor students, endorsed by the respective Asean countries for a full-time undergraduate degree course at a selected Singapore university.

Apart from NUS, previous recipients had been chosen to study at other selected universities, namely Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Singapore Management University (SMU).

The award covers full tuition fees, living allowance, accommodation and return airfare. The Singapore government does not impose any bond on the scholarships awarded under this programme.
