Public service attorneys may get student loan break

Best in Law provides interest and principal forgiveness each year that attorneys work in Kentucky as:
# Public defenders.
# Assistant commonwealth’s attorneys.
# Assistant county attorneys.
# Legal service attorneys.
# Law clerks in the supreme, appellate and circuit courts.
Attorneys who wish to apply for these benefits must have passed the bar exam, be eligible to practice law in Kentucky and be working full time. They may apply for forgiveness of up to 20 percent of the outstanding principal each year, not to exceed $10,000. These benefits are available only to attorneys who have Federal Stafford and Federal PLUS Loans with The Student Loan People. Some consolidation loans may also be eligible for forgiveness.
Best in Law benefits are available to attorneys who live outside Kentucky as long as they meet the requirements for working in Kentucky. Attorneys are eligible to apply for these benefits each spring. The application may be printed from studentloanpeople.com. The deadline for applications is usually early May. Borrowers who take advantage of Best in Law should consult a tax adviser about possible tax consequences.
